President says “No” to NASA

I remember watching a TV series called “Space: 1999”  when I was a kid in the 1970s.  It had this great vision of what life would be like in what was then the future–we would have a moon base and Martin Landau would be in charge of it.  What could be better?  Well, in real life we’ve never gotten our moon base, and President Obama has proposed cutting the funding for such a program for the foreseeable future.

I wonder if Democrats will universally praise this move and Republicans will universally decry it.

On the one hand, I think some more space exploration/trips to the moon/a base there would be great.  Such trips would lead to technological breakthroughs that could help the masses down here on earth.  However, there has been a lot of noise about reducing deficits.  And there is a school of thought in favor of having private enterprise step in and lead the push into space.

I really want us on the moon, but given the complaints about how our government mismanages so much stuff, maybe it would be better if it wasn’t in charge of this.
