Politics: It’s a bad day for Democrats (times 2).
1. Congressman Anthony Weiner, a Democrat from New York, claimed he was victimized by a hacker who got into his Twitter account and sent a lewd picture to a female college student. Weiner tried to write the issue off as a harmless prank and move on, but questions abound. Why was a 40-something married man following a 21-year-old college student on Twitter? Why did Weiner hedge when asked if the dirty photo was of him? Why did he hire a lawyer? Why wouldn’t he ask for a criminal investigation of a case of hacking and (arguably) sexting? Why wouldn’t he think it was a matter of national security that he as a member of Congress had one of his electronic accounts compromised?
Oh, mighty term-limits, where art thou?
2. According to The Washington Post, the economy continues to drag. This is bad news for incumbent politicians, but mostly for Democrats. They still control the Senate and the White House, so it will be hard to blame the Republican agenda for this.
Influential Christians: I’m reading The Alpine Tales Paul J. Willis. It is 4 complete stories in one volume. I’m currently on #2, The Stolen River. At one point these stories were being marketed as Alpine fairy tales, which is as good a description as any. Willis writes cleverly worded, entertaining stories. When I think of my favorite Christian novelists, like CS Lewis, Bodie Thoene, and Ted Dekker, Paul J. Willis belongs on the list.
College Advice: Hey, college student, read this summer! I might write this every summer, but it bears repeating. If you read a little over the summer, it will make it easier for you to keep your head above water in the fall. You don’t really even need to read academic stuff (at least, as it relates to what I am talking about). Your brain is like a muscle (sort of). If you exercise it a little, it’s stay in shape over the summer. Pick something you already like (fishing, art, cars, fashions, sports, whatever) and read about it.
Sci-Fi: I really wasn’t that interested when I saw that a new X-Men movie was coming out, but now I am really intrigued by the commercials and trailers. Looks like there is going to be a Cuban Missile Crisis angle. And more importantly it looks like it’s going to be a very entertaining movie.
